Espoo is the second largest and the fastest growing city in Finland
Why Espoo Innovation Garden?
Espoo is a unique city
Espoo is the second largest and the fastest growing city in Finland. Being part of the Helsinki metropolitan area, co-creating and collaborating with universities, companies and residents is the key element of Espoo’s approach. We are home to, for example, Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland while companies like Nokia, Fortum, Kone, Lumene, Neste Oil, Rovio, and Valmet are headquartered in Espoo.
Several facts make Espoo a unique city. Espoo residents are the youngest in all of the major Finnish cities, with 20% of inhabitants being under 15 years old. Over 51% of over 24 year-old residents hold a university degree. In the last 50 years the population has increased tenfold and will grow by 24% in the coming 20 years. Espoo is also a perfect link between Europe, Russia and Asia as we have fast flight connections from the Helsinki Airport. Our business-friendly environment offers an accessible location, functional infrastructure, modern logistics and communications networks for international companies and investors. Espoo also has a network-like urban structure. The five city centres of Espoo — Leppävaara, Tapiola, Matinkylä-Olari, Espoonlahti and Espoo Centre — are each the equivalent of a medium-sized Finnish city.
The Tapiola, Keilaniemi and Otaniemi area is the biggest innovation hub in Northern Europe with thriving international companies, the hottest Startup Sauna on the planet, various cultural activities and sports clubs as well as a renowned community of scientists and researchers.
The city of Espoo actively invests in an already highly developed infrastructure. The extension of the metro network from Helsinki to Espoo is the lastest example. For the last 10 years, an average of 370,000 m2 of building space has been completed annually.
Espoo is constructing a network city structure based on rail connections, intelligent transport system and intelligent services.
